Easter Skiing in Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang: A Local’s Spring Ski Guide
© Travel Sorted If you have ever wondered whether Easter skiing in Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang is worth it, let me answer as someone who lives here: it is one of the best weeks of the whole season. Every year, we save our favourite ski days for spring.
Blue skies from morning to evening. Pistes groomed like velvet. Views that go on and on, over the Leoganger Steinberge and a sea of clouds in the valley. And the best part: you share all of it with very few people.
This is our Easter in the Skicircus, the runs we love, where we stop for lunch, and the small tips that make a spring ski day perfect.
Winter snow. Spring sunshine. Space to breathe.
People often ask me if there is still enough snow at Easter. Honestly? Some of the best snow of our year comes in spring. The base is deep after the winter, the nights are still cold, and the Bergbahnen prepare the pistes to perfection every single night.
The days are long and bright. You ski in a light jacket, you sit in the sun for lunch, and you still come home with that happy, tired feeling of a real winter day. New to the area? Start with my local’s honest guide to skiing the Skicircus.
Bring good sunglasses, goggles and real sun cream. The spring sun up here is strong, and the snow reflects it all back at you.
The Leoganger SteinbergeA whole mountain, almost to yourself.
This is the moment I wish every guest could feel. We skied from the Kohlmais over to the Wildenkarkogel, and for long stretches there were just two other skiers on the whole piste. Wide, perfect runs. Nobody behind you. Nobody in front.
Hardly any lift queues. No rush. No pressure to get on the next chair. It feels like a private ski resort, with one of the biggest ski areas in Austria all around you.
Take the first lifts of the morning. For the first hour the pistes are untouched corduroy, and that feeling under your skis is the reason we love skiing.
Kohlmais → WildenkarkogelSunny side in the morning. Leogang for the best snow.
We start on the Kohlmais above Saalbach. A few runs on perfectly prepared pistes, then over the Wildenkarkogel, where the views open up towards Leogang and the Steinberge. It is one of those places where you just stop, take a breath and look.
Then we ski down to the Leogang side. Many of the runs here face north, so the snow stays firm and fantastic, even on warm spring afternoons. While the sunny slopes turn soft, Leogang still skis like winter.
The Hendl Fischerei sits right at the top station of the Asitzbahn and Steinbergbahn in Leogang. Grilled chicken, fish, music and a sun terrace. Reserve a table at Easter, it is popular for a reason.
Leogang
The pistes are a work of art.
I have to say this: the teams of the Bergbahnen do an incredible job. Every night the snow groomers go out, and every morning you find pistes that look and feel perfect. At Easter, when other resorts slowly close, here you get some of the best skiing of the season.
Blue sky, endless views, great snow. That is Easter skiing in Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang.
Fresh lines, all afternoon.
At Easter my son is in his element. He switches between snowboard and skis, and honestly, he is fantastic on both. Even in the afternoon he keeps finding fresh lines, again and again.
Up on the Kohlmais the pistes were wide, empty and perfect under a blue sky. That is spring skiing for families: longer days, warmer weather, space on the slopes and lunch in the sun instead of a cold hut. Everybody is happy, and everybody wants to come back.
Easter is school holiday time in many countries. Book ski school, rental and family rooms early, and the rest of the week becomes easy.

KohlmaisFollow the sun around the mountain.
Spring skiing has its own rhythm. Ski the sunny slopes in the morning while they are firm and fast. Around midday, when they get soft and creamy, move to the north-facing runs, like the ones down to Leogang.
Then slow down. Long lunch, a sun terrace, and a few easy afternoon runs on soft snow. That is the Easter way.
Big ski area. Small village feeling.
Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn are connected into one huge ski area with modern lifts. You can ski a different route every day of the week and never repeat a run.
And right above Saalbach village is the mountain everyone falls for. Read my local’s guide to the Bernkogel.
