Ask anyone in Saalbach which mountain they’d ski if they only had one morning, and a lot of us will say the same thing: Bernkogel. It starts right in the village, it works for absolutely everyone, and the first run of the day here is pure magic. This is the mountain where ski holidays begin, and where many people secretly want to stay.

Boots on, and you’re already on the lift

No bus, no car, no long walk in ski boots. The Bernkogel lift leaves right from Saalbach, and a few minutes later you’re up above the valley with the whole Glemmtal in front of you.

Wide, open, sunny slopes that are easy to read and a joy to ski. Beginners find their confidence here, good skiers find their rhythm, and nobody feels rushed. Honestly, it’s the mountain that makes people fall in love with skiing.

The first run belongs to you

There’s nothing more beautiful than Bernkogel in the morning. Fresh corduroy, crisp air, the sun coming over the peaks and the village waking up below you. And the run down towards Saalbach, with the whole village in view? World class. Every single time.

Local secret

Be on the first lift. One run won’t be enough, trust us. Go two, three, four times while the slope is still empty. By the time the crowds arrive, you’ve already had the best part of the day.

One mountain, everybody happy

BeginnersWide, gentle slopes and space to learn without pressure. Ski schools are in the village, and your instructor can meet you at the meeting point or up on the mountain.

Non-skiersTake the lift up and stay. Two huts, music, views and deckchairs in the sun. Meet the skiers for lunch and nobody misses a thing.

Fun loversKickers, jumps and a fun park for those who like a bit of air. Plenty of zones to play in, so you could honestly spend the whole day up here.

On the left · TraditionalBärnalmWood, warmth and Austrian tradition, the way a mountain hut should be. Music, views over the valley and deckchairs in the sun. Order a Kaiserschmarrn and don’t look at the clock.

On the right · ModernLuis AlmModern, but with a proper Austrian heart. Great music, a sunny terrace and a view you’ll keep photographing. The spot for a long lunch and the first drink of après.

Bernkogel is just the beginning

At the top of Bernkogel, a whole new world opens up. Here’s how we’d ski it:

From the top, the Skicircus is yours. One way to Fieberbrunn, the freeride mecca. The other way into Hinterglemm and its magnificent network of slopes.
Stay on the sunny side, from Bernkogel all the way to Hochalm. Red and blue runs, confident skiing, amazing huts and big views. Some guests spend their whole ski holiday here, and we get it. Then ski back down to Saalbach.
Want more of a challenge? Cross with the Zwölferkogelbahn to the Zwölfer and try the steeper runs, including the World Cup run.
Cross over to Westgipfel and Schattberg, and ski down into Saalbach village. A full circle, and après is waiting.

Questions we get asked

Is Bernkogel good for beginners?

Yes, one of the best in Saalbach. Wide, open slopes and a lift straight from the village. Ski schools are in the village, and a private instructor can meet you at the meeting point or up on the mountain.

Can non-skiers go up the Bernkogel?

Absolutely. Take the lift up, sit in the sun at Bärnalm or Luis Alm, enjoy the music and the view, and meet the skiers for lunch.

Where can I ski from Bernkogel?

Everywhere. Fieberbrunn for freeride, Hinterglemm for its huge network of slopes, or stay on the sunny side all the way to Hochalm. Via the Zwölferkogelbahn, Westgipfel and Schattberg you ski a full circle back to Saalbach.

When is the best time to ski Bernkogel?

First thing in the morning. Fresh pistes, empty slopes and the best light of the day. Worth setting the alarm for.
