© Pixabay YOUR ROAD.
Your road. Your rules.
No tour bus. No timetable. No one telling you it’s time to go. Just you, the window down, and a road that bends around the next mountain.
See a lake that takes your breath away? Stop. A village with one café and the best apple strudel of your life? Stay an hour. A farmer selling cheese by the road, a chapel on a hill, a view nobody puts in a guidebook? It’s all yours. Take the mountain pass instead of the motorway. Wake up and decide where today takes you. Breathe. Slow down. Feel every bend, every valley, every little piece of the land under your wheels.
But freedom only feels free when nothing goes wrong. Which roads need a vignette, where you can’t drive into the old town, which passes close in winter, where to park when the hotel has no garage. That’s the part that steals your holiday.
So we sort it before you even start the engine. The route, the car, the stops worth making, the hotels with parking. You just drive.
The best views were never on the motorway.
Thank you for choosing the open road. The places we love most can’t be reached by train or tour bus. They’re around the next bend, at the end of a gravel lane, on a pass that only opens in summer.
One country or four. Mountains, lakes or the sea. Tell us how you like to travel and we’ll draw the route around you.

Vienna · Wachau · Salzburg · Hallstatt · Zell am See
Austria, slowly. That’s the whole point.
Start with coffee houses and palaces in Vienna, then follow the Danube through vineyards and abbeys. Salzburg, smaller than you expect and more beautiful than you’re prepared for. Then the Salzkammergut lakes, one after another, until Hallstatt rises from the water. Finally Zell am See, where the mountains take over. Your own car means the quiet lakes, the roadside farm shops and the viewpoints most people never find.

- The Rossfeld panoramic road, the Alps on both sides.
Yes, the water really is that green.
Just across the border from Salzburg lies a corner of Bavaria that feels like a secret. The Königssee, so clear and green that people think the photos are edited. A silent boat to the red onion domes of St. Bartholomä, with the whole lake to yourselves. The little church of Ramsau with the peaks behind it, the most painted view in Bavaria. And Lake Chiemsee, where King Ludwig II built his own Versailles on an island. With your own car, Salzburg is only half an hour away.

Drive up to Lake Achensee, the “Tirolean Sea”, where the water is so clear it looks unreal. Roll through the Zillertal past farmhouses heavy with flowers, and climb the Gerlos Alpine Road with the whole valley falling away below you. At the bottom, the Krimml Waterfalls. - The Soča river, a green you won’t believe until you see it.
- Truffles in Istria’s hill towns, then the sea at sunset.
Austrian Alps · Lake Bled · Soča Valley · Istria
From snowy peaks to the sea, in one unforgettable drive.
This is our own road, the one we drive every year between our winters in the Alps and our summers in Pula. Leave the mountains of SalzburgerLand, cross into Slovenia and stop at Lake Bled for a slice of its famous cream cake. Climb the Vršič Pass, then follow the emerald Soča down towards the sea. In Istria, hill towns sit on top of the green hills like crowns, truffle dishes fill the menus and Rovinj glows in the evening light. You start in the Alps and finish with your feet in the Adriatic.

Self-drive · 6 nights · South Tyrol & Dolomites
- The Great Dolomite Road, pass after pass of pale rock towers.
- Seiser Alm, Europe’s largest high alpine meadow.
- Enrosadira, when the peaks glow pink at sunset.
The mountains that blush at sunset.
South Tyrol is Italy and Austria at the same table: espresso with your apple strudel, road signs in two languages, wine valleys below and wild peaks above. Start in Bolzano and meet Ötzi, the 5,300-year-old Iceman. Then drive into the Dolomites: the little church of Val di Funes against the jagged peaks, mountain lakes in colours you didn’t know water could have, and one high pass after another. Locals say the dwarf king Laurin cursed his rose garden, but forgot the dusk. That’s why, for a few minutes every evening, the mountains still turn pink.

- Truffles with the Karlić family and their dogs in Paladini.
- Tomaz winery near Motovun, wine with a view of the hills.
- In Pula’s Roman Arena, 2,000 years old and still standing.
Hill towns, truffles and the sea.
This is where we spend our summers, and it still surprises us. Istria is Tuscany’s quieter cousin with the sea next door. Drive through vineyards and olive groves to medieval towns perched on the hills. Motovun, sitting above the truffle forest, was named Europe’s second best hidden gem for 2026 by European Best Destinations. Then down to the coast for a swim, a sunset in Rovinj and an evening in Pula, where a Roman arena sits in the middle of town.
Morning truffle hunt with the Karlić family in Paladini, then lunch at their table with a view nothing will ever beat. In the afternoon, on to Tomaz winery near Motovun. There are so many winemakers here, but on this route, this is the one we send our guests to.

With a car, the rest of SalzburgerLand is yours too: a day on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier in Kaprun, an evening in Zell am See, or a break from the slopes in Salzburg’s Christmas lanes. Ski when the snow is best, explore when the legs need a rest.

Brda & Collio
Same hills. Two countries. Twice the wine.
The border runs right through the vineyards. On one side it’s Slovenia’s Brda, on the other Italy’s Collio. Same grapes, same families, two flags. Taste Rebula in the morning, Ribolla Gialla after lunch, and try to tell us which one won.
- Family wineries on both sides
- Tastings booked, driver included
- Truffles, cherries and long lunches
