OUR HUNGARY.

A country with fire in it.

You won’t understand a word here, and it doesn’t matter. Hungarians look serious for about five minutes. Then the pálinka arrives, then the food, heavy, honest and full of paprika, and suddenly you are not a guest anymore. Budapest takes your breath away from the very first evening: the Parliament glowing on the Danube, grand domes, cafés with chandeliers and cakes the Austrians still claim as their own. Hungarians just smile and cut you another slice.

A few steps from St. Stephen’s Basilica, strudel dough is still pulled by hand until it covers the whole table. Around the corner, a wine shop with bottles from floor to ceiling. You think that’s a lot of wine, then someone opens the cellar door and there is more. You sit down, and before the first glass is poured, a violin is already playing at your table. Beyond the city: warm thermal water, Lake Balaton and lángos hot from the fryer, eaten standing up.

Hungary doesn’t ask you to fall in love. It pours you a glass, plays you a song and lets it happen.
